This year your donation can make a real difference to the lives of our young people.
Baobab supports young people like Zeinab, a 20-year-old woman from Sudan who witnessed the killing of her family by a paramilitary group. She managed to escape but received sexual abuse on the way to the UK. Once here, Zeinab found herself overwhelmed by flashbacks, anxiety and intrusive negative thoughts. She was referred to the Baobab Centre, where she began attending individual and group therapy and our caseworkers helped her navigate the asylum system and healthcare. In her own words
“If Baobab hadn’t helped me, I would have considered suicide. Baobab helped me with my health, helped me with the trauma in my brain. They were my family when I had no one. They helped me when I couldn’t solve my problems on my own, and when I had many difficulties in my life.”
All our community members have experienced overwhelming human rights abuses and as a result suffer from complex mental health vulnerabilities. They deserve humane and children-centred support, that appropriately addresses their needs.
Unfortunately, support for young refugees like Zeinab is at risk. Restrictive asylum and care systems are dramatically impacting their lives, with reductions in services affecting housing, healthcare, benefit, education and employment.
Baobab fills the growing gaps left by these systems and offers a warm and welcoming therapeutic community.
